Used dvds bought in Paris

1. Matewan
2. The Graduate
3. Hearts of Darkness
4. Open Your Eyes
5. Jeremiah Johnson
6. The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid
7. JFK
8. Wild Bill
9. Carnal Knowledge

I've been looking for a copy of Matewan, so finding one for one euro was a catch. It's a fullscreen version, which is a bit annoying, but still...

  1. Yay! Matewan is great. I only own a VHS copy, though... Same as with most of Hal Hartley's movies. I'm so 20th century.

Have you read the book he wrote about the making of it? One of my favourite film books too. I love the part when he contradicts those who compare filmmaking with an army operation, saying he had little interest in joining an army and even less in running one...

  2. I must have had over 100 VHS tapes, that then were impossible to sell. I'm sticking to dvd now, as long as they make them, I'm not upgrading a second time. No, haven't read that book. It sounds interesting. Got the interview book, from the Conversations with filmmakers series.

  3. Are you a fan of Will Oldham? He plays the young preacher in the film, Danny. He's talked about the experience in a lot of different interviews.

  4. Yes, I'm a fan of his music. I've lost a bit track of his latest records, but I really like I See A Darkness and Master And Everyone, both masterpieces.

  5. His latest album, Wolfroy Goes to Town, was released three months ago and I think it's the best thing he's done in years. If you like those two, I'm sure you'll like this one.

  6. Don't forget Hazel Dickens! Jason, as a native West Virginian, it warms my heart to see my favorite cartoonist enjoy this movie.

The coal companies are still doing terrible things to people here.

  7. I had to google Hazel Dickens, and has since been listening to clips on Youtube, including Fire In The Hole, from Matewan. She also has a version of Dylan's Only A Hobo. Great music!
