Also: What do you think of the cover typography? Reviewing your past posts, it looks like an initial French design matched the basic approach used for the Norwegian version, with the titling as a block of text. But the final French design appears to have been more linear, also adopted for the Spanish version.
I'm looking at this and trying out different ideas at home. (That's why I was curious about the English title.) I feel like the linear approach creates negative-space issues (in the empty blue sky), while a blockier approach can make effective use of that heading area, while still feeling off-kilter. The angle strategy itself… It sort of flattens the cover to a single depth (X-Y axis, no Z), whereas a traditional horizontal titling can offer a comfortable baseline for the artwork, a contrast that may lead to a greater sense of depth.
The relationship between title and artwork is a challenge to curate, in terms of finding a desirable effect or result. (Particularly without knowledge of the story content.)
It's actually kind of a joke title. Trieste sounds like the word trist in Norwegian, triste in French: sad. So I thought it would be the ultimate arty and pretentious title. Death in Trieste. While the book itself has quite a bit of humour.

ReplyDeleteWell, the title is inspired by Death in Venice by Thomas Mann (that I've never read), so it should be Death in Trieste.
