Top 5 science fiction novels:
1. The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester
2. Dune by Frank Herbert
3. Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A Henlein
4. Neuromancer by William Gibson
5. The Man in the High Castle by Philip K Dick
The Demolished Man by Bester is also very good.
Great choices, though I lean towards 'The Puppet Masters' by Heinlein and after FINALLY finishing 'The Man in the High Castle' this year (after 10+ years of failed attempts), I have to say it ranks third of fourth on my list of favorite PKD books. It's great, but there are a couple others I like a little better.
ReplyDeleteI must confess I've only read Castle and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by PKD. I should check out some of his other books.
ReplyDeleteJust re-read my comment and realize I come off a bit snobby. Sorry! I just love lists of books. I suggest 'The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch' or 'Now Wait for Last Year' -- they're pretty on par with the others. 'Ubik' is next on my list. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteWhat, no, I didn't get the impression of you being snobby! I just meant to say that after reading a lot of science fiction in my teens and twenties, I haven't really kept up with the genre. I will look for the titles you mention.
