Have you read Murakami's 'The Wind Up Bird Chronicle'? It starts with something a bit like this. And is a great book!
I started reading that book once, but never finished it. An inspiration for this new story is actually The Limey, Soderbergh's film. I'd like to try to do a story in a non linear style like that.
It's quite good, though at 600 pages is a commitment. There's also some hubbub over the various translations. I believe the German one is wildly different from the English one, I believe. I love Soderbergh but have never seen The Limey -- will certainly put it on the list.
wow! im excited to see where this goes Jason. Gives that mystery element like in "Emily says hello" keep up the good work!

Thanks! Haven't read anything by Pynchon. I'm aware of Maddin's work, but haven't actually seen any of his films. Where should I start?
for Pynchon, Inherent Vice or, uhm, 'V' maybe.for Maddin, Branded upon a brain and keyhole.
Tales from the Gimli Hospital is on youtube, so I might start there.
