My short career...

... as a pinup artist. Drawn sometime in the late 80s, I believe I sent it around to a couple of men's magazines, but without any luck. Just as well, maybe... Please don't embarrass me by finding the photo it was based on.

My Dinner With André

Wallace Shawn has dinner with André Gregory. Directed by Louis Malle.

I saw this film in the cinema over 20 years ago and finally got the dvd. I enjoyed rewatching the film, even though I still have some mixed feelings about it. Is it intriguing, annoying or both? My sympathy in the film lies more with Shawn, who tries to make a living and worries about paying rent, than with Gregory, who can travel abroad for half a year, trying to find himself. Still, Gregory makes some good points about breaking habits to truly feel alive. Shawn's response is, do you really need to go to some forrest in Poland to do that, can't you do it in your own apartment? Even if some of the conversation borders on pretentious, there is still lots of food for thought. Two things have changed since they made the film, I guess. The New York they talk about and show some images from in the beginning of the film, looking like the end of civilisation, doesn't exist anymore. And today, with internet, is it something that brings people closer together or further apart? I wouldn't mind hearing what Gregory has to say about that. So, My Dinner With André 2?

Another drawing

Skinny tie, ripped jeans and leather straps around the wrists.... No price for guessing which decade this was drawn in. And with a rotring pen, ughh! Okay, I'll rewatch old a-ha videos now...

Stolen Kisses

Jean-Pierre Léaud is discharged from the army. He goes back to his old girlfriend and gets a job as a private detective. Directed by François Truffaut.

It's very much a French film. As a detective, Léaud doesn't try to find a missing person or stolen jewelry, the client rather wants to know why nobody likes him. There's a constant distance to the characters - we never find out why they behave the way they do. The ending itself is quite enigmatic, with lots of questions left unanswered. There are also some very funny and charming scenes. The scene at the breakfast table, where Léaud and his girlfriend write notes to each other is a real movie moment. The film opens and ends with a catchy song by Charles Trenet and made me want to rush out to the nearest record store and get one of his cds.

Old drawings, new blog

I've decided to put the old drawings, done in my teens, between 78 and 85, on another blog, here: http://theoldcatandthedog.blogspot.com/
Yes, it's another awful Hemingwayrelated pun, please accept my apologies. It will be sort of an art project, I guess, that might not appeal to everybody, but the idea is that putting up two or three drawings will be a bit interesting, putting up one hundred drawings might hopefully be at least slightly more interesting. In theory, at least. The drawings will be more or less in chronological order. Some drawings are not dated so I will just have to guess where they fit. There will be lots of awkwardly drawn superhero drawings, doodles, strips and later full pages that I drew for the humour magazine Konk, some published, some rejected.

Zombies!

From my exhibition in Oslo

Old drawings

The first drawing, from 79, is copied from a Neal Adams Batman story, the second drawing, from 83, is influenced by Serge Clerc. Apparently, there was some progress in drawing skills.

Well, I'm back...

...from two weeks in Norway. The comics expo in Oslo was nice. There were a couple of hours the sun appeared. And I played minigolf with old friends. Didn't win any games, though. I brought with me back to France a bunch of drawings from my teens that I'll scan and put up on the blog. Like the one above, drawn in my Serge Clerc period.
